The Self-Help Podcast with Deepali Nagrani
Hi, I’m Deepali — a speaker, storyteller, and proud mom to a wonderful one-year-old. I live in Victoria, BC, Canada, hands down the best place to live!
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been drawn to public speaking. It lights me up in ways I can’t quite explain. I’ve always sought the stage, longing for a space to say something that matters.
Then one day, I realized: if you can’t find a stage, build one.
This podcast is that stage. It was born not just from my love of words, but from one of the hardest chapters of my life. At 32, after one of the toughest chapters of my life, I discovered something worth sharing: my voice, reshaped by truth and tenderness.
Here, I speak from the messy middle of motherhood, healing, identity, fear, hope, and everything in between. It’s not perfect, but it’s real. If you’re craving something genuine, something that feels like a deep breath — you’re in the right place.
Let’s speak the truth. Let’s find meaning together.
Welcome to the stage I built from the feeling of always wanting to be on one.
I’m so glad you’re here.

Hello my beautiful listeners and welcome back to the Self-Help Podcast. Your safe space to unpack life's chaos one story at a time. I'm your host, Dipali, and today's episode is one that I feel deeply connected to. We are diving into we are diving into a question that has shaped countless decisions in my own life. How do you know when you're listening to your intuition and when you're actually listening to fear? This is one of those timeless struggles, whether it's about relationships, career choices, moving to a new city, starting a business, or even something as simple as speaking up in a meeting. The battle between intuition and fear is real. And today, for the next hour, we are going to untangle that knot together. I'll share research, sprinkle in personal stories, give you practical tools and weave in the wisdom from thought leaders who've spent decades exploring this. My hope that by the end of it, you'll not only understand the difference between the two, but also will feel it in your bones. So grab a cup of tea or coffee, get comfortable, and let's begin. A few years ago, I stood at a crossroads. I had an opportunity to take a job that looked perfect on paper. Stable, prestigious, good pay. But something in my gut whispered, This isn't for you. At the same time, Feo shouted, If you don't take this, you're going to regret it. You'll miss out and people will think you're crazy. Sounds familiar, right? That tug of war is what we are talking about today. Intuition is often described as a knowing without knowing why. Psychologists call it subconscious pattern recognition. Your brain is constantly collecting data from your experiences, observations, knowledge, and sometimes it delivers the answer in a flash, in a jiffy. Fear, on the other hand, by definition, is a protective mechanism. It's your brain, your gut, telling you or giving you warning signals. Now, fear can be helpful, it keeps you safe from genuine threats, but it can also hijack your decision making when there's no actual danger. Albert Einstein once said, intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. But here's the twist Fear often dresses itself up as irrational thought. It disguises itself. It sounds logical. Don't do this, it's too risky. That's why we confuse it with wisdom. Let's ground this in science for a moment. The gut brain connection. According to research from John Hopkins Medicine, our gut contains over 100 million nerve cells. It's literally called the second brain. No wonder we say, I have a gut feeling. Participants played a card game in one of the gambling casts, which was conducted in the year 1994 by Dr. Antonio Damasio. And they played the card game essentially with hidden rules. Long before they consciously figured out the patterns, their bodies reacted. That's intuition at work. Picking up on patterns the conscious mind hadn't caught up yet. There are some functional MRIs done, and those studies show that when fear dominates, activity in the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for rational decision making, decreases. Translation Fear literally clouds judgment. So science says intuition is quiet but wise. Fear is loud but protective. I love it. Intuition, quiet and wise, fear loud and protective. When I was deciding whether to start this podcast, Fear said, Who are you to do this? What if no one listens? Frankly, I don't even know how many people are actively listening to my podcast. Like I do have some numbers, but they're not very telling. But intuition said, you always loved speaking, storytelling, and connecting. This is where your heart is. If I had listened to Fear this moment, me talking to you right now, just us, wouldn't have existed. Oh, Previnfree once shared that every major decision she made came from listening to her inner voice. And if you think about it, that inner voice rarely shouts, it whispers. Not fear. She calls it the whisper. Even when she left her successful TV role in her career, a move people thought was insane. Her intuition told her that there was something greater waiting for her. And the rest is history, we all know how that turned out. Now, think about relationships. Maybe you've stayed in a friendship or partnership out of fear. Fear of being alone. Maybe fear of judgment or what will people think. But your intuition knew the connection was raining you. The moment you listened to intuition, you felt slighter, freer like yourself. Now, telling and spotting the difference between intuition and fear. Tone of voice. Intuition is calm, natural, neutral, steady. Fear is loud, urgent, panicky. Intuition feels expansive, like a gentle yes in your body. Whereas fear feels constrictive. Tight chest, sweaty bams. Shallow breath. Intuition often arises quickly, just like a flash. Fear tends to build up, spiral, overthink. The aftermath, intuition leaves you with clarity even if it's uncomfortable. But you still have clarity over confusion. But fear leaves you with confusion and what ifs? Now, there are some practical tips that can help you. Pause before deciding. Give yourself 24 hours if possible. Intuition remains steady, but fear often fizzles. Journaling really helps. Write it out. What is my intuition saying? What is my fear saying? There's a difference, and these are two different voices. And when you write it down, when you think aloud, they become obvious. Mind body check. Sit quietly. Ask yourself the question. Notice does your body feel open or tense? Meditation and breath work. Research shows that mindfulness reduces the release of cortisol, meaning less fear-driven decisions. But build small trust. Start listening to your intuition in small matters. What to eat, what route to take, who to call. Over time, your inner compass gets stronger and stronger and you learn to trust it. Steve Job once said, Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. And if there has been one constant theme in my life, it has been my inherent nature to listen into my gut. I almost always not to make a point for bragging, but I almost always know what is right and what is wrong for me. Because I believe in my gut, I listen to myself, I check in with myself frequently. And I know the answers. I know what my intuition is guiding me. And I also often find myself at crossroads confused between whether it's intuition and fear. And some of the practical tips that we just talked about really helped me in those situations. Now, there have been moments in my life when of course fear was my loudest companion. It still is at times. And I don't think we can ever go very far. Fear screamed worst-case scenarios at me. But deep down, intuition whispered, You're going to get through this. You're stronger than you think you are. The days I leaned into that inner whisper, the days I leaned into that intuition, those were the days I found resilience. I found my quiet strength, clarity, and even peace amidst uncertainty and chaos. That is exactly the part of intuition. It's just not about decisions. It's about navigating life with courage, clarity, authenticity, and a lot of hope that everything is working out in my greatest good. Everything that life throws at me, good, bad, ugly, is for my benefit. Even though in that moment it may feel like it's the worst thing that's happened to you or is happening to you, and why me? And all those questions arise. But just this that whatever's happening to me in this life, all what unfolds, is for my greater good. And everything is always, always working out for me. So, my dear listeners, the next time you're standing at your crossroad, ask yourself, am I making this choice from a place of fear or from a place of deep knowing? And remember, fear isn't the enemy, it is just trying to keep you safe. Thank it. But intuition, intuition is your compass. It doesn't shout, it whispers, it doesn't push, it guides. And as Rumi said, there is a voice that doesn't use words. Listen. There is a voice that doesn't use words. I hope you all listen to it. Thank you for spending this time with me on the self-help podcast. If today's episode resonated with you, I'd love for you to share it with a friend, your family member, or anyone that you think you might need it. And if you haven't already, please hit that subscribe button. Please follow so you never miss an update. And remember, the more you practice listening inward, the stronger your intuition becomes. And when life gives you lemons and you gotta make lemonade out of it, it's not the outside. It's the inside that you need to travel to. And maybe just maybe you will realize that the answers you've been searching for have been sitting inside of you all this while. Until next time, stay brave, stay gentle with yourself, keep listening, and listen to your intuition and not only to your fear. Bye bye.
